This easy bucket bag sewing pattern (also known as a project bag pattern) has five sizes that makes anything from a small drawstring pouch project bag to a generous bucket bag.
The bucket bag pattern uses straight-line construction only - every pattern piece is a simple straight-sided rectangle, which makes it a genuinely approachable project for newer sewers and quick work for experienced ones.
The finished bucket bag (or project bag) has a soft gathered neck, sturdy rope handles, a flat gusseted base so it stands up on its own, and an optional shoulder strap for wearing crossbody.
There are optional pocket pattern pieces included too, so you can add interior pockets if you want them. Once you've made one, you'll want to make several - each size uses the same construction method, so you can work through the range without relearning anything.

Fabric Requirements
Fabric needed for this pattern ranges from 0.5m for the smallest size up to 1.1m for the largest, in either 110cm or 140cm wide fabric. You'll want the same amount again for the lining. Full lay plans included so you know exactly how much to buy.
Fabric Ideas
This project bag pattern works best in medium-weight woven fabrics that hold their shape. Denim gives a proper hardworking finish that softens beautifully over time. Linen makes a lovely lighter version that still has enough body to stand up. Cotton drill, cotton canvas and cotton twill are all reliable choices. Waxed cotton is my top pick for a water-resistant version that's brilliant for the beach or the school run. Faux leather works too if you want a more structured, polished look.
Avoid very lightweight fabrics like cotton lawn or voile - the bag needs some body to hold its bucket shape.
