1. The Japanese Knot Bag pattern
The Japanese knot bag pattern is one of my best loved designs and the perfect introduction to the set. It comes in three sizes, from a dainty wrist bag through to a tote sized shoulder bag, and every version is fully lined with an optional inside pocket. A simple flat bottomed gusset gives the bag a neat base so it sits upright and holds more than you would expect. Sew the small one in a precious silk to let the fabric do the talking, or make the large in canvas or drill for an everyday shoulder bag pattern that carries beautifully.
2. The Hobo Bag pattern
The hobo bag pattern is a soft, draped shoulder bag with a single continuous handle that loops over the shoulder and a gently gusseted base that lets the finished bag stand up on its own. It comes in five sizes from XS to XL, so the same hobo bag sewing pattern makes everything from a little hobo bag purse to a generous statement bag or beach bag. The interior is fully lined with an inside pocket, and there are optional pieces for ties, a loop, a bow and even a slim pocket for an umbrella or water bottle. It works brilliantly in linen, denim, cotton drill or an upcycled saree.

Every single piece is a straight sided rectangle, which means there are no curves and no fiddly shaping anywhere in the make. Sew a small size as a gift bag, a medium as an everyday bucket bag, or a large one as a stand up project bag roomy enough for a whole knitting or sewing project. Like the others it comes in five sizes and is fully lined.

Fabric ideas and finishing touches
These bags love a medium weight woven fabric that holds its shape. Cotton drill, linen, denim, canvas and cotton twill all sew up beautifully, waxed cotton makes a water resistant version, and faux leather adds a bit of structure. Because each is a lined bag pattern you can have fun pairing a plain outer with a bold lining, or use up treasured offcuts on the smaller sizes.
